Desksaver Plus – Run Screensavers right on your Desktop

February 14, 2006

From the makers of the Screenshot Plus Widget, comes the Desksaver Plus widget. Desksaver Plus doesn’t act as a widget, but more like a utility or a preference pane. Desksaver Plus allows you to choose a screensaver, then it turns your desktop into that screensaver. For example, run the RSS screensaver on your desktop, and get up to date news via RSS right on your desktop. I have been looking for an application that could do this for a long time, and I was very excited when I found it. So now, I can run picture slideshows from my iTunes library, or maybe play the iTunes album art screensaver. The widget also shows the amount of CPU is being used by Desksaver, so it can show you if the screensaver is making your system run slow.

Desksaver Plus requires Tiger, it is Universal, and it is freeware! Get a free download from MacUpdate.

Hey, I don’t know if the developers will read this, but great work. I just have two problems with it:

    a) When a real screensaver starts, and then you move your mouse, it kills the desktop screen saver as well as the real one. I have to open up dashboard and press the play button again. Anyway to fix this?

    b) Even though I have a custom folder picked in the screen saver pane it only ever gives me the option for the Pictures fodler in the widget. I would like to have a custom slideshow of some of my own pictures running in the background, but it seems the only way to do that is by removing everything but the images I want from my Pictures folder. What is the deal with that, especially since ElectricSheep, a screensaver I installed (electricsheep.org) does (thankfully) show up.
