Boot Camp has issues

June 7, 2006

Boot CampBoot Camp is currently beta and is available for download for Tiger users, and it is to be one of the primary features found in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. The current version of Boot Camp is very impressive for a beta project, but it does have several annoying and quite obvious issues.

The biggest issue I have with Windows and Boot Camp occurs several times after I close the lid on my MacBook Pro. The sleep light shines when I close the lid, but after opening the lid the screen turns blank and the computer fails to respond.
Another problem I have is screen savers and the power saving options. Currently, only the Intel Mac Mini can use work with the power saving options and the screen saver; the iMac, the MacBook, and the MacBook Pro cannot work with these options.
The iSight and Front Row remote are not yet supported in Boot Camp, but the initial release of Boot Camp in Leopard may include these drivers. Another annoyance is that the speakers do not shut off when an external speaker or a set of headphones is plugged into the audio-out jack.

Booting into Windows is slightly awkward with the very, very large Windows logo and the occasional crash during boot-up. An additional feature I wish would be included in Leopard is the option to restart into Windows via the Apple menu or the shut-down prompt (and possibly vice-versa).

Apple has done a great job so far, but they have a lot of work to do to get Boot Camp ready for prime-time when Leopard is released in Fall 2006.
