Goodbye Internet Explorer for Mac!

December 19, 2005

Microsoft has finally told the public that they will cease to issue downloads of Internet Explorer 5 for Mac on January 31, 2005. Microsoft also mentioned that they will end support for the browser on December 31, 2005.

Additionally, as of January 31st, 2006, Internet Explorer for the Mac will no longer be available for download from Mactopia. It is recommended that Macintosh users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple’s Safari.

Microsoft stopped updating Internet Explorer for Mac when Apple first released Safari in Panther. On June 13, 2003, Microsoft officially stated that they would cease to update the browser due to “competition” from Safari.

TUAW makes a good point that web developers have no excuse to make web sites that aren’t compatible with Safari anymore.

Finally, I guess Microsoft discovered that no one with a brain would want to use IE5 for Mac.
