Adium X VS. iChat

December 11, 2005

Think of Adium X like a Firefox for iChat, it has many features not found in iChat and you can customize it to your style.

Adium X lets you customize the your buddy list, the dock icon, and your message window, and you can download many themes from Adium Xtras.

I’ve customized my Adium to an Aqua theme (as seen in screenshot). I used the xAdium dock icon, the Dashboard Like buddy list, and the Metal Chat 2 message window style.

Adium X has many cool features that could be attractive to some users. Adium X lets you chat with many people and multiple messaging systems. You can chat with people who use AOL & AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Google Talk & Jabber, Bonjour, and more.

A problem I have in iChat is that you have so many message windows open, it clutters up your screen. Adium X fixes this issue with tabbed messaging. There is also a way to encrypt messages, a .Mac only feature in iChat.

Adium X does not support video and audio messaging, but does support file transfer and many types of emoticons. You can also have animated user icons, which is one of many complaints about iChat.

Bottom Line: Adium X has many great features that can be useful to many users, and the ability to change the user interface is one of them. Users who have multiple chat accounts with different protocols might want to switch to Adium X, but users who use audio and video chat might want to stick with iChat.
