I have spent a couple minutes into making this illustration for you to enjoy. It’s what I think the next iPod will look like.
The new iPod with Mobile Front Row and Airport Extreme built-in. Mobile Front Row includes Mobile Safari with tabbed-browsing and RSS. Connect to TVs via Universal Dock (sold separately). Features a wide touch-screen with a touch-sensitive click-wheel. Available in white and black and 40GB and 80GB versions. From $299.

Nice mockup – and it would be amazing if it was like that, however theres one big thing I disagree with : the touch wheel. By removing it Apple can supply a better iTunes interface and can support widescreen video. What I envision is something like that, where the screen goes all the way across, and on the sides of the pod (as in the parts where the metal casing starts), touch pads. That way the user can hold it and by adjusting their fingers can navigate the interface. Then add button ability to the touch areas and you’ve got yourself a nice little gadget.

I have seen mockups, such as yours, but I can’t imagine Apple getting rid of the click-wheel. The click-wheel is one of the best things the iPods have, and to get rid of it would be a big mistake.
I failed to mention this, but I was thinking that the click-wheel would appear and disappear. If the user would touch the screen, the click-wheel would appear, but when the user is not touching the screen, it would disappear. I also imagined that the click-wheel should always be available when navigating in Front Row, which is what I made in the illustration. Then, when playing around in iTunes or watching a movie, it would toggle on and off.

Very nice design. I’m in the camp that believes Apple would deliver it without a physical click wheel. It increases room for the display and, more important, cuts out the cost of the components.
The important side would be software. It needs to act like iTunes where you can use your own CDs or buy on line. Too many potential customers have a nice library of DVDs and would want to be able to use them.
$299 would be nice. Apple probably wants more. Pity. 10 out of 10 on the design effort.

Yeah, $299 was my suggested price, although I really doubt it would start out with that price tag.

How about if the click wheel is seperated on a remote control. That way, there would be no need for making the screent a touch screen and no worry about prints. It can be a wired remote that goes between the earbuds and the device, or even a wireless one. I don’t know. Just an idea. What do you guys think?

I’ve now owned an iPod video (80Gb) and found the touch buttons easy to use, having hands like coal shovels most electronic gadgets presents me with an in-ability to navigate controls effectively without accidental pressing of unwanted functions. It’s got to be a tough choice to minimize the control buttons on the iPod without sacrificing usability by us big fingered folk.
I agree that the next step forward for Apple is to merge iTunes into the iPod for consistancy. even after owning 3 different iPods, I have always found the iPod firmware to be at best unreliable, My latest video iPod has however been more reliable, but still suffers the occasional freeze-up.
I also find that no matter what video I add to the iPod, the sound track ALWAYS goes out of sync with the video if the video is paused or fast forwarded through the film.
Come on Apple, through so many models and now so much experience wih making iPods, you could at least have ironed out some of the still apparent issues that have seemingly always plagued iPod software & firmware.

Hi, I would have to tell all of you something that I really don’t want to hear myself… That would be too like the iphone. I personally don’t think that apple would create a copy of another of apples products, but it might be that way. The ONLY thing I know wont happen is the screen being sideways. Steve Jobs wants the customer to be able to hold apples products without having to struggle. Hence the iphone, the ipod, the thin and elegant laptops (macbookpro and macbooks) the new thin imac. Very nice image that you made but I dont see all of it working. If the ipod has all of the ipod space filled with a screen, it would be an iphone without the phone. I honestly cant see it happening, sorry. I really wish it could work because i am on verizon and I wouldn’t be able to get the iphone without having to do a lot of stuff with unlocking it. I believe that the new ipod design must enhance its interaction with user rather than the shape that already communicate high technology. I think many easy function might help this device to be better, such as showing the lyrics while playing the music or to have a shortcut function to make a fast selection of letter on the list, so you don´t have to circle many times with the finger. Have you seen the music interface for the iphone? That’s what’s gonna be for the ipod touch. No click wheel. Just use your finger to hit play, pause, forward, rewind. Also to scroll the lists of artists, playlists, etc… There’s no need for the click wheel. The click wheel will be used on the non-touch screen models and it may be replaced with the mechanical version that prior versions used. WIFI will probably be built-in with the option of transfering/updating music/playlists, photos and videos. Just like the Apple TV. 09.05.07

I think you have it. Apple filed a patent over a year ago for a virtual control interface that appears on screen, can be used without even physically touching the screen, and then disappears. I believe the new ipod will use such technology so that the full screen size can be used.
I also believe there will be a model without a hard drive as RAM is getting pretty cheap these days. I predict a version with 8, 16 or possibly 32 GIG of flash RAM and a large lithium battery where the HD would have been.

I was quoted by a dear friend that now I’ve got my whole entire extensive music collection on my iPod (video classic 5.5 80gb), That I’ve now got a radio station on it! No longer just a collection of favourite tunes.
Needless to say I love to listen to my iPod wherever and whenever I’m on the move (even when driving) with the aid of my wireless fm transmitter.
However I keep experiencing the dreaded ‘bitten apple’ whenever I am in search mode and while pressing and holding the left arrow to clear the search text box. EVERY TIME without fail, even if I press the button repeatedly too fast to clear the box.
Not too happy about doing firmware updates, the last update screwed with my USB2 ports, which now only recognise my iPod as being plugged into a USB1 instead. so file transfer are somwhat slow.
Apple support were most (un)helpful in assisting with resolving this issue over the phone and at the main local iPod dealers.
