Leopard’s Illuminating Graphical User Interface: Illuminous

December 10, 2006

IlluminousMac OS X’s Aqua has matured very slowly over the last few years. It seems like many OS X users are tired of Aqua and ready for a new revolutionary GUI to compliment and enhance the experience of using a Mac. An increasingly popular theme for Apple’s latest applications have been smooth unified metal and dark glass. With each major update to one of Apple’s applications, its seems like the days with blue gel scroll-bars and candy bar progress bars are ending.

Its no question that Leopard will feature a new GUI, but no one really knows what it will look like. Its no doubt that Leopard will feature resolution-independent graphics support that will allow for greater resolution displays with the same and windows sizes. However, the details of the interface have not yet been revealed, but many are hoping that we will see the final announcement of Leopard features at Macworld 2007, where chances of a GUI announcement are high.

Apple Gazette has featured a new rumor from a supposed insider that has claimed that the new GUI that will replace Aqua will be nicknamed ‘Illuminous’. The report has no solid information on what the Illuminous theme will look like, but I believe I know exactly where Apple might be headed.

As I said, Apple’s latest trend in its software GUI is a darker, flatter, translucent, reflective, “illuminating” glass appearance. The GUI is also making headway beyond the sheer appearance, to window sizes, visual effects, icons, etc. Fullscreen applications will definitely be a hit in Leopard, to clear your desktop from clutter and manage your workspace more efficiently. Just like Aperture and iPhoto, imagine fullscreen browsing, video-editing, Garageband, iWork, etc. Sleek graphic effects when opening windows, files, applications, are also likely to be improved making the OS seem more alive, similar to the widget ripple effect. And with the new GUI change, I am also expecting Apple to replace their outdated icons. Ultimately, Apple is heading towards a sleeker, darker, simpler, livelier GUI.

Apple has been the leader in computer and GUI design for years, and Vista’s new Aero interface has probably provoked Apple’s design team to topping them off with a mind-blowing interface (that requires half of Aero’s hardware requirements). It would be a true disappointment if there was no sort of GUI announcement when Steve finished giving the major features in Leopard.

The dark translucent appearance Apple has developed over the last three years has seemed to have expanded to many of the operating system’s core applications. Here are a few of the many traces of the new dark glass appearance rumored to be featured in Leopard:

I’m all for a revamped interface with new aesthetics, but I hope they’ll present us something more substantial than just a new look, be it insanely fabulous. A new (and better) finder would be great for example. Another thing I would appreciate is the return of the NeXT vertical menus : if Apple could only offer the choice between the present menubar and those vertical menus (well, we’ll have native virtual desktops, which I have been longing for for years — and, no, I wasn’t satisfied with the various third party solutions).

I don’t think that Apple will use black for general purpose ui elements. They work very well with pictures (iTunes cover art, iPhoto, Aperture), where a black background contrasts very nicely and for a reduced ui like Front Row.

But I don’t think it will work as a general guideline. I guess (and hope), the general Leopard look will be based on the flattened iTunes user interface.

Frankly, I don’t care too much about the look as long the window *behavior* will be finally unified in some way. In terms of usability, inconsistent window behavior is a problem, not the eye candy.

Anyone wanting to know what the new look will be, simply head to the Apple store. If you’ve paid attention, with every slight update in appearence to the OS, the store has gotten a minor makeover as well. Apple started this “gloss black” look, which has been adopted by everyone from ESPN’s Monday Night Football, to Napster. There is NO WAY that Steve Jobs will allow this trend to enter into the general user interface, as anyone with an art degree will tell you that grays make your colors appear more vibrant, while blacks suck the color dry. Vista is ripping off this look, Apple will move with whites and grays. But don’t take my word for it, check out the Apple store.

Wrong…Black surrounding a picture will make it’s colors pop, Grey gives an un biased view of the picture allowing for more acurate color manipulation/correction. Anyone that actually went to school for graphic design will have been told that…(hopefully)

A example of this is in Adobe photoshop when switching window mode using the three buttons at the bottem of the tool pallete the second button takes your image full screen with grey surrounding it. The last button “presentation” mode will show your image with a black surround so to make the image stand out! not sap it of any color.

If you do go to the apple website try checking out the color section… http://www.apple.com/pro/color you will see much usefull info…..maybe direct your art degree teachers thier also

I’m glad to hear Apple is finally ready to get away from its, well, “plastic candy” look.

The black interface looks really slick, but I’m not sure that would be the shipping color. Partly so they aren’t accused of ripping off Vista’s default black interface. I think we’ll probably see a darker gray interface (which goes great with black interface components).

And in an unrelated comment to Kuro Rai… I use both OS X and Win XP on a regular basis, and the days of a Windows app taking down the system are long gone (providing you are using NT, 2000, or XP). It’s time to come up with some new material…

Black surrounding a picture will make it’s colors pop.

“… go to an art gallery, you’ll see that there walls are always a warm grey, this let the prints stand out, not get sucked into the wall.”

They have switched from stark white (which does dull the colours) to neutral gray, and black would make the room too dark even though the work would look great.

And before you try to trump me with your credentials, I’m pretty sure that my Master’s degree, thirty-five years of painting, printmaking and photography and eighteen years teaching University will pretty much trump your “real ad agency” experience.

    Royal Flush

    December 13th, 2006 at 11:37 pm

  33. Marko says:

Fact is that neutral gray is complement to all colors. Making saturation stand out but it doesn’t make the image look contrasty as the black does. Black enhances contrast while neutral gray makes the saturated colors pop at first sight. It is easy to test it and a bit more complex to explain. Just get a photo (i used water lilies form sample pictures of Win XP) into Photoshop, make 2 more layers for a nice fat black and gray frame, switch between gray and black. The neutral gray seems to make saturation “the most important thing” while black creates more contrast making the highlights stand out more. Another experiment is to make yourself a 200 x 200document and put a say 100 x 100 color square in the middle. When u switch to gray color seems more dense but not as bright as with black. While black makes it pop more and it seems just a bit less dense that with gray. So in general it seems that black makes most images look better.

Fullscreen applications will definitely be a hit in Leopard, to clear your desktop from clutter and manage your workspace more efficiently. Just like Aperture and iPhoto, imagine fullscreen browsing, video-editing, Garageband, iWork, etc.

What exactly compels people to write such incredibly stupid statements? Is this a consequence of a lifetime spent looking at computers but never actually using them?

Both iPhoto and iTunes use this “everything in one window” model, and it sucks beyond belief, crippling these applications and making them vastly more painful to use.

As an example, suppose you subscribe to two podcasts that tend to include duplicate material — for example some of the material in the Princeton University podcast also appears in the University Channel podcast. Try going through these two lists side-by-side to remove duplicates. Note your inability to do so because of the stupidity of the UI. (And don’t tell me to use “Show Duplicates”; they tend to have different names. And for the geniuses who tell me to open the podcast in a separate window [this is IT 7], go ahead, do that, open the podcasts in a separate window. See what happens — just when you thought the UI design couldn’t get any worse.)

Or, a different example, try browsing the podcast directory at the iTunes store, and adding the occasional podcast. Note the extreme efficiency of the mode you are FORCED to work in whereby each time you add a podcast you are switched out of the iTMS, and it then takes three minutes and ten clicks to get you back to where you were in browsing the list.

Or, a third example, the clumsiness of trying to compare multiple photos in iPhoto at anything other than the tiny size of the library window.

Look, I don’t mind a “My first computer” UI for the baby users; but I also expect a UI accessible to me that does not treat me like a nine year old.

Apple Cinema Display… “Apple designers carefully chose this hue to minimize interference with color onscreen, providing a neutral reference point for viewing your work.”

NEUTRAL, when you are framing your work you should frame it with a neutral color, so the work is not overpowered. Frame it with this tone and your blacks will look “blacker” and it will help the other colors appear more vibrant.

    Your witness…

    December 17th, 2006 at 11:15 am

  41. Boogieman says:

Informant – You are right and wrong. To me, “providing a neutral reference point for viewing your work” means that gray does not disturb the eye when working on color correcting images. It has noting to do with presenting your work as beautiful as possible. As for “grays make your colors appear more vibrant, while blacks suck the color dry” – you are right when you talk about colors in an art gallery, but not when talking about colors on screen. Light and reflected light are two different things.

I seriously doubt that Apple will go all black. That is to dark and negative.
I am dissapointed with the iTunes 7 change in many ways, not just the bad colors making it look Mac OS 8-9´ish.
What´s the point of Core Image and Core Graphics technology if all goes dull and we see no fx, transparency etc?
How many apps, especially thirdparty apps use any cool fx at all?
    Was it all marketing trick?
Apple better make something really nice and cool or all the core tech is a waste in the OS.
No, iTunes 7 looks like crap!
iTunes 7 got to much of Windows Vista feel to it, and what was the retarded decision to remove the EQ button from the player to a menu?
A real hangover idiot job is what iTunes 7 is to me.
I´m glad someone made the Aqua4iTunes hack, but to bad if we now have to skin apps or the OS too.
That feels to much like the shitty Windows world to me.
I don´t mind if aqua goes or even the metal, but something really special and smart better come to replace it or i will be sour as hell.
The whole look is also what makes you smile while using a mac as it looks great and is then also more fun to use.
iTunes 7 better be a small fukk up then a test, as that is a pathetic design attempt.

I seriously have a hard time reading stuff from people who want us to believe their opinion matters, yet are unable to know the difference between YOU’RE and YOUR, and to know the possessive form of IT. “ITS” is the possessive form of IT. IT’S is a contraction for IT IS.

YOUR shows possession . . . it is YOUR book, etc.
YOU’RE is a contraction for YOU ARE; as in YOU”RE an IDIOT. Or, You’re Crazy.

The blogger named “WHAT YOUR CRAZY” needs to stay off the game show “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader” because he isn’t.

Oh and Jeff? You wrote “my 8 year is catching these SIMPLE mistakes”. That’s no typo, that is sloppy sentence construction. You’re missing whole words. So we can disregard your opinions from now on?

I’ve got an Amazon gift certificate burning holes in my pocket,
and I want to get the most bang for my buck.

Enter the Secret Amazon Web Pages:

    http://tinyurl.com/38sojf

This is where you’re going to find the “latest sales, rebates, and limited-time offers” from
Amazon, and you can score some pretty deep discounts if you’re a savvy shopper.

Next, there’s the special Sale link. This is open every Friday, and ONLY on Fridays.

You can find the same good discounts here as you would in hidden Deals, although some
Fridays you can really get lucky and make off like an Amazon bandit – I’ve seen discounts
there as low as 75% off sticker price.
